History of Mt. Enon Church

Mt. Enon Baptist Church was organized in November of 1869. Because the Church structure was destroyed by fire on two occasions, much of the recorded history of the Church was lost. However, members of the early church recreated the history based upon their own memories and research.

Before the church was organized, the Afro-American and Caucasian Christians of this community worshiped together at Abilene Baptist Church in Evans, Georgia. After the Afro-American population of this community grew to a large percentage, they made a decision to organize a church of their own.

As good Christians they requested from Abilene Baptist Church, their membership letters, and the letters were granted. Founding members include Rev. Ben Gardner, Rev. L.H. Hawthorne, Rev. John Williams, Bro. Gilbert Clinton, Sis. Lucille Clinton and Sis. Rose A. Marshall.

After receiving their membership letters, they worshipped in various places such as gathering under brush harbors to worship. Through their struggles, faith and prayer allowed them to move forward. They settled on the tract of land where the Church stands today; the assistance from ministers and the congregation of Abilene Baptist Church was requested, and received. Rev. Davis, Dea. Evans and Bro. Jones was just a few members from Abilene that assisted in this transition. The members designated the fourth Sunday of each month for their day to worship.

During the past one hundred and thirty-four years, Mount Enon has been blessed with eleven (11) pastors. The first pastor, Rev. A. Walker served faithful for many years until he was called from labor to reward. Rev. T. M. Robinson, the second pastor, also served faithfully until his death. Rev. Wilson, Mount Enon’s third pastor, served several years, but later resigned.

Rev. C.S. Watkins was the fourth pastor; under his leadership, the church made great progress. Two churches were built, and three Deacons were ordained: Dea. George M. Lord, Dea. George Evans, and Dea. John Madison. Rev. Watkins later resigned.

The Church continued to progress under the leadership of Mount Enon’s fifth pastor. Rev. I.M. Taylor. He was instrumental in building the Church that stands today, and many members were added. Rev. W. M. Moore and Rev. Anderson Mims were ordained as ministers. One Deacon was ordained Dea. H.M. Mims. Rev. Taylor served faithfully until his death.

In 1928, Mount Enon received Rev. C. L. Moore as her Pastor. The following Deacons were then ordained: Dea. Willie Lowe, Dea. Earl Jackson, Dea. Ernest D’Antignac, Dea. Richard Dent, and Dea. Juriah Winfrey. The Usher Board was also organized during this time; however, Rev. Moore later resigned.

Rev. H. W. Phinizy became Pastor after the resignation of Rev. Moore leading the church for several years until his resignation. We were without a Pastor for a short time before receiving Rev. T. H. Glasker. During his leadership, two additional rooms were added and a choir was organized. Six. Deacons were ordained: Dea. Sam Bussey, Dea. Tommie Dent, Dea. Abe Dunn, Dea. Claborn D’Antignac, Dea. Albert Lowe and Dea. Steve Davis. Rev. Glasker resigned shortly afterwards the Church was again without a Pastor, but remolded the Church and installed a heating system.

In September of 1958, the lord sent Rev. A.C. Brown to lead Mount Enon’s congregation. The White Rose Club was later organized; Rev. D. D’Antignac was ordained to the ministry and Bro. James Ramsey was ordained as a Deacon. After Rev. Brown’s resignation, Mount Enon received her tenth Pastor, Rev. James Dunn. Under Rev. Dunn’s leadership, Mount Enon continued to prosper. The following Deacons were ordained: Dea. Sam Crawford, Sr., Dea. Bennie Green Sr., Dea. Dural Winfrey, Dea. James Johnson, Dea. Herbert Lowe, Dea. Ambrose D’Antignac, Dea Willie Hartfield, Dea. Styles Williams, Dea. Bennie Green, Dea. Steve Davis and Dea. John Norman. Rev. Rickey Dent was licensed and ordained. Rev. Dennis D’Antignac was licensed under Rev. A. C. Brown and ordained under Rev. James Dunn. We have added many members to the church and under Rev. Dunn’s leadership.

After the death of Sis. Florine Hillary the Mother of the Church, Sis. Laura Reid became the Mother of the Church. Sis. Laura Reid was succeeded by the late Sis. Pinkie Jeburk, so far the church has yet to name a successor to Sis. Pinkie Jeburk.

Over the years, three restrooms, a finance room and a ramp were constructed, and two new heating systems and an inside baptism pool were installed. During a period of remolding, the pulpit, choir stand and a storage room received improvements. In addition, Mt. Enon refurbished the antique furniture in the Pastor’s study, and purchased a piano and an organ. Also, the ladies restroom was remodeled, and a new roof was added. Later, the Church installed a new heating ventilation and air conditioning unit. Darian D. Tillman donated speakers to the Church and installed them free of charge.

During the year of 1998, we lost two members due to death: Dea. Jessie Jeburk Sr. Rev. James Dunn served us faithfully until his death October 18, 1998; he is still greatly missed. The church added two members to the church in 1998: Sis. Mary Lue Pollard and Michael Eugene Simpson.

During the year of 1999, Sis. Annie Lou Crawford reunited with her Church. We lost one member to death, Sis. Annie Mae Thomas. A new air conditioning unit was installed; many people saw need for new Hymnbooks, and Bibles and donated them out of the kindness of their heart.

On October 10, 1999, Rev. John Harmon was installed as the new pastor for Mount Enon Baptist Church. Mount Enon scheduled its first Bible Study to be held on November 4, 1999. After the installation of Rev. John Harmon, the first Bible Study session was conducted on November 4, 1999 as planned and continued each Thursday night at 7 p.m. there after. Only good things followed this accomplishment. We have since become a full time church conducting 11 a.m. services on 2nd, 4th and 5th Sundays and 8 a.m. services on the 1st and 3rd Sundays. Just in the year 200 we added 15 new members and as of October 7, 2001, 17 new members have been added. In addition a Quarterly Communion for Sick and Shut-in Members as well as a Candlelight Communion was established. Other additions have occurred, but none as great as our establishment of the Department of Educational Ministries, which includes Our Conducted Choir Worship; Conducted Rights of Passage Training for Youth Ministry Team Members; Youth Ministry and the new member Orientation.

The following year, a new handicap ramp leading to the church Fellowship Hall and a door was installed leading to the sanctuary. In addition, a much needed well-lit sign at the Washington Road entrance is now in place.

In 2002 a van was purchased and the Youth Choir was organized; we gained nine new members and one requested a letter to move to another church. In an effort to improve our skills, two leadership-training classes were offered and obtained several speakers to educate our youth.

This past year 2003 we established a Community Outreach Development Project after obtaining a 501C-3; the organization also registered with the state of Georgia. During the year we endured the loss of two members through death: Sis. Minnie L. White and Sis. Maggie P. Crawford.

Sister Christine Dent was consecrated as a Deaconess April 3, 2005. Robes were purchased for our Youth Choir. Bible Study was moved to Wednesday night and we now have classes for our youth.

Christian Education continues with the leadership attending classes at Warren Baptist and Beulah Grove Baptist Churches Mt. Enon published its first church yearbook. We have added 19 members during this past year. Although we had periods of joy we also was sadden by the loss of the following members: Bro. John West, Sis. Albena Price, and Dea. Jessie Jeburk Jr. We ask for your prayers as we continue to do God’s Work.

We ordained Rev. Bob Hale April 27, 2008. We also mourned the loss of Sister Louise Norman, and Brother Cleveland Lowe.
